Introduction to the Origin of Carrots.


Carrots, scientifically known as Daucus carota, have a long and fascinating history that stretches back thousands of years. While the exact origin of carrots is still debated among experts, it is believed that they originated from the wild carrot species found in Iran and Afghanistan. Then this attractive tuber was propagated to neighboring regions, namely the Middle East, North Africa. From there, the carrot was introduced to Spain, until the 1300s, it appeared in Northern Europe and China.

Currently, carrots are grown and used widely in countries around the world. Especially where the climate is temperate. For Vietnam, carrots are also a popular crop and bring a lot of high value. Plants grown in many rural areas for commercial use and purposes. Carrots play a versatile role in Vietnamese cuisine, finding their way into a wide range of dishes. As mentioned, carrots are grown in temperate climates. Therefore, the best temperature for carrots to grow and develop is in the range of 13°C to 18°C. Of course, we can grow carrots at temperatures above 25°C but will not yield as high as low temperatures. Carrot plants typically grow as biennials, completing their life cycle in two years. In the first year, the plant produces foliage and develops a taproot. In the second year, under appropriate conditions, the plant flowers, produces seeds, and completes its life cycle. However, carrots are commonly harvested in their first year before they enter the flowering stage.

Carrot plants vary in size, depending on the variety and growing conditions. The foliage usually reaches a height of about 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 centimeters), while the roots grow below the ground.

Carrots are a popular vegetable crop cultivated during the winter season in northern Vietnam. The cultivation of carrots is concentrated in the Red River Delta region, encompassing provinces such as Hanoi, Hai Duong, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, and Thai Binh. Among these provinces, Hai Duong stands out as the largest and most significant carrot-producing province, boasting extensive cultivation areas and high production volumes, approximately 1,500 hectares, with a production volume of 800,000 tons. Bac Ninh and Thai Binh also contribute to the carrot production, with smaller cultivation areas, ranging slightly above 1,000 hectares.
