Bac Kan tangerines acquired the designation of "Vietnamese agricultural gold brand" in 2015 as a typical agricultural product of Bac Kan province. This crop is solidifying its place as a vital crop, assisting farmers in the Bac Kan highlands to escape poverty and become wealthy on their own land. Bac Kan Tangerine, a treasured product from the highlands, has earned its reputation as a regional delicacy. With its distinctive characteristics and unique flavors, this tangerine variety has become a source of pride for the Bac Kan province in Vietnam.

Distinctive Characteristics of Bac Kan Tangerine.


Bac Kan Tangerine is easily recognizable by its flat, round shape with a diameter ranging from 7 to 9 cm and a height of 4 to 5 cm. The smooth, yellow skin becomes vibrant and easily peelable when ripe. The juicy, well-rounded segments burst with refreshing sweetness, complemented by a mild, pleasant acidity. The tangerine's peel boasts a golden straw color, remaining intact and adding to the visual appeal. Its unique aroma is a testament to its authenticity and quality.

The roots of Bac Kan Tangerine trace back to the late 18th century, making it a longstanding tradition in the region. One notable variety, Quyt Quang Thuan, named after a village in the Bac Kan province, was initially found in high-altitude forests or grew naturally within dense, mature canopies. In the early 1980s, local residents began cultivating these tangerines as dedicated crops, leading to specialized orchards. Astonishingly, even trees aged 70 to 80 years continue to bear fruit, maintaining stable yields.


In recent years, the Bac Kan Tangerine has gained increasing popularity among the local residents of Bac Kan province and neighboring regions, solidifying its status as a distinctive agricultural commodity. This exquisite citrus product has not only enriched the local economy but has also played a pivotal role in reducing poverty and fostering sustainable prosperity. Currently, the entire province boasts approximately 2,600 hectares of orange and tangerine orchards, of which 2,000 hectares are under cultivation and yield an annual output of around 16,000 tons.


The renown and quality of Bac Kan Tangerine are closely associated with specific areas within various districts and communes. Notably, the reputation of this citrus gem is deeply intertwined with regions encompassing Quang Thuan, Don Phong, and Duong Phong (located in Bach Thong district); Ra Ban, Dong Vien, and Phuong Vien (in Cho Don district); as well as Thuong Giao, Dia Linh, My Phuong, Chu Huong, Cao Tri, and Yen Duong (within Ba Be district).


Among these locales, Bach Thong district is considered the heart of orange and tangerine cultivation in Bac Kan province, with an extensive area totaling around 1,400 hectares. Out of this, 900 hectares are actively harvested each year, contributing significantly to the province's agricultural output with an impressive total value of 40 billion Vietnamese dong.

Harvest and Seasonal Charm.


The period from the 10th month of the lunar calendar until the Lunar New Year, or Tet, is the prime time for Bac Kan Tangerines. During these months, the tangerine orchards in Bac Kan exhibit all their characteristic traits – a resplendent golden hue, a lustrous surface, and juicy, succulent flesh. This timeframe showcases the tangerines at their peak, enticing both locals and visitors to indulge in their extraordinary flavors.


Geographical Indication Recognition.


The significance of Bac Kan Tangerine is further underscored by its geographical indication (GI) recognition. On November 23, 2012, the Bac Kan Tangerine was officially granted a Geographical Indication Certificate by the Intellectual Property Office under the Ministry of Science and Technology. This recognition highlights the unique qualities of Bac Kan Tangerine, cementing its status as a cherished regional treasure.

Bac Kan tangerine is a testament to the rich agricultural heritage of the Northeast region of Vietnam. Its exquisite flavor, distinct appearance, and historical significance make it a cherished delicacy in the Bac Kan province. With the coveted Geographical Indication recognition, Bac Kan Tangerine has secured its place not only in the hearts of locals but also as a point of pride for Vietnam's culinary landscape.
